If you want to sand more material in less time, Skil's new 5-inch random orbital sander/polisher is the right choice.

The orbital action of the sander removes twice as much material when compared with 1/4-sheet sanders. The orbital sander also has a patented easy-to-empty container Micro-Filter system that stops twice the amount of dust as other sanders. Sandpaper can be quickly changed thanks to Skil's hook & loop feature. The sander is ergonomically designed for ease of gripping and handling, and the trigger is conveniently located on top of the tool for easy one-hand operation.

The 7490-01 not only performs an exceptional sanding job, but it can also polish any smooth surface with just a quick swap from paper to pad. Think of the time that can be saved and the professional quality that can be achieved by having this tool in your workshop. --C. Dwight Barnett

Power Tools History

Since the ancient Egyptians began using a hand-powered lathe centuries ago, man has striven to make arduous building and assembling tasks easier, quicker, and more efficient through power tools. We've come a long way from those sand-covered turning machines, but the end goal is no different from our desert-dwelling ancestors. Today, nearly every home in every industrialized country houses and uses power tools.

Circular Sander

Even though the concept of the power tool has been around for a long time, it wasn't until the late 1800's when the first modern-era power tools became possible. The advent of electric motors made highly-efficient stationary and portable power tool technology a reality, and high-speed assembly lines made power tools both affordable and profitable.

Circular Sander

The Bosch company was at the forefront of power tool technology in those early years. Founded in 1886 Germany by Robert Bosch, the company initially focused on automobile components with integrated electric parts, and was responsible for such developments as the first low-voltage magneto ignition. Before long, companies in other industrialized nations began developing the first electric power tools, and Bosch introduced its first power drill in 1932. Today, Bosch still engineers and manufactures automotive parts, and its power tool division has grown to include nearly every household and assembly tool on the market - including power drills, belt sanders, circular saws, and more. As part of the company's growth, it has acquired other successful power tool manufacturers that started during the same early 20th century era.

In 1923, American inventor Raymond DeWalt introduced the world's first radial arm saw, a sliding circular saw that could make long cuts with accuracy. One year later, he founded the DeWalt power tool company in Baltimore, Maryland; another company that has grown substantially over the last 85 years. At the forefront of portable power tool technology, DeWalt's power tools are revered by carpenters and homeowners alike for their long-life, durable cordless battery-styled power drill, circular saws, and other power tools; and the company currently manufactures over 200 types of power tools worldwide.

Founded in 1915 in Japan, the Makita Corporation has also staked its reputation on cordless, battery-powered power tools - most notably, the hand-held drill, which Makita introduced in 1978. Nine years later, the company had a full arsenal of cordless, professional-grade power tools for contractors. Today, Makita manufactures over 350 different power tools, both portable and stationary, and the pronounced teal color emblazoned on all of their tools is often mimicked by others trying to capitalize on Makita's reliable name.

The early 20th century proved to be a hotbed of power tool advancements, and many companies worked hard to develop profit-turning innovations that moved their products off store shelves and into people's homes. While the term power tool traditionally conjures thoughts of electric drills and sanders, machines like the pipe threader and utility pump are also considered power tools. This is the area the Ridgid company focused on when it was founded in Elyria, Ohio, in 1923. Still a leader in the plumbing tool industry, Ridgid now has a power tool division that focuses exclusively on contemporary power tools and has released its own saws, drills, and even air tools.

A.F. Siebert founded the Milwaukee Electric Tool Company one year later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known for manufacturing heavy-duty power tools, Milwaukee is best know for the 'Sawzall,' one of the most widely-used reciprocating saws in the world. Like their power tool manufacturing competition, Milwaukee currently produces portable and stationary power tools like circular saws, drills, band saws, grinders and sanders - over 500 different models in all. Unlike their competition, many of Milwaukee's power tools are released in both 120 and 230 volt models, drawing the line between household and commercial/industrial power.

Best known for the Skilsaw they invented in 1924, the Skil power tool company evolved out of the Michel Electric Handsaw Company when they entered the power tool market. Fueled by the ingenious circular saw invention, the company elevated itself to the upper echelon of the small power tool industry with jig saws, grinders, sanders, and a whole slew of handheld, cordless power tools. In 1996, the Bosch company purchased Skil but still keeps its power tools on shelves worldwide as one of the most popular power tool lines on Earth.

The Delta company has changed hands several times since it was founded by Herbert Tautz in 1919 in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin garage. Tautz focused on small tools but when Delta was purchased by Rockwell in 1945, the company made a profitable shift to the stationary tools - like planers and bench sanders - it's renowned for today. Delta isn't the only name this line has carried, however; Rockwell enveloped the company on takeover before selling it to Pentair, which re-introduced the Delta name before selling out to Black & Decker in 2004.

A veritable power tool power house, the Craftsman brand was coined by the Sears company in 1927. At first, the company primarily manufactured common hand tools like hammers and screwdrivers; but soon jumped on the power tool bandwagon and is now one of the top-selling producers of all power tools, both stationary and portable.

S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker founded the Black & Decker small machine shop in 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland; and the duo found their niche in the power tool industry by inventing the electric drill seven years later. The pistol-grip and trigger style drill became popular and is now a staple on construction sites and in households alike. Realizing the profit potential of power tools, Black & Decker has grown and acquired several other popular power tool brands, including DeWalt, Porter Cable, Delta, and Kwikset.

As industrialized nations become increasingly technology-driven, power tool production stands to increase as lightweight, powerful, and longer-lasting batteries try to match the power and reliability of corded power. Versatile contemporary models and thousands of accessories continue to make everything from woodworking to metal machining easier, more efficient, and more profitable for manufacturers, contractors, and homeowners alike. As power tools have become affordable for nearly everyone, only the hammer has resisted an electric redesign destined to change the way we work forever.

Makita 9227C 7-Inch Hook and Loop Electronic Polisher/Sander Overview

Power polishers help cars, boats, floors--or anything else you take a shine to--come clean. The Makita polisher uses electronic speed control to maintain a constant 600 to 3,000 rpm, even under load, and that combined with multiple speed settings results in little risk of burning paint. The polisher converts easily to a sander, and quick-change hook-and-loop sanding pads eliminate clamping, bending, and tucking. We like how the handle provides secure, comfortable grips for use at any angle, and the lock-on trigger means you can go long distances with minimum fatigue. The 10 amp motor provides plenty of power, and, as with all Makita products, it's designed for long life, with easily accessible brushes that can be changed outside of the tool's housing. If you like to maintain a flawless façade, this tool deserves a place in your arsenal.

Performing Finish Sanding on Wood Cabinets

Finish sanding is a very important step in the process of making a cabinet look its best. This step is done after the stain is applied, but before the final lacquer. An evenly applied sanding will result in a cabinet that is smooth and professional looking. If it is done incorrectly, the wood surface will not have even stain coverage and will look lighter in some areas. In this event, the stain could be reapplied but will not turn out quite as well. Take your time when doing the finish sanding and follow some of these simple tips.

Circular Sander

The first thing you'll need is an electric sander. It doesn't have to be big or expensive, just versatile enough to accommodate different sandpaper grits. You may consider doing the sanding manually, but I really suggest using a machine because it is hard to sand evenly and without error. To sand thoroughly, I would also suggest getting a sander with a spinning brush attachment which can get into the hard to reach grooves of the cabinet trim. These are known as three dimensional sanders. You'll want to choose either a 220 grit or a 180 grit sandpaper to do finish sanding.

Circular Sander

The goal is to go over the wood evenly and thoroughly. If any part is left un-sanded, then the piece will look uneven. Let the sander do most of the work, and don't push down too hard. Any burrs or splinters need to be removed in this step. One or two passes using a circular motion should get the job done. Use your flat sander to go over the front and sides of the cabinet. Then take your circular sander and work on the trim and molding, if you have any. The finished product should look even and flush.

If you notice extreme differences in the wood surface that consist of elevations and depressions, then you did not sand properly before you applied the stain. Areas that have tree knots can be particularly difficult to sand down flush with the wood face. If this is the case, you will need to either re-sand the area or use a wood plane to achieve a relatively smooth surface. Re-apply your stain and do the finish sanding one more time.

At this point, your cabinets should be looking pretty smooth with little defects. This is important because the next stage is applying the final sealer. Any imperfections will show after the sealer is applied. Take great care to inspect your cabinets from multiple angles before completing the job.

Book Summary - Love Is the Killer App - How to Win Business and Influence Friends - By Tim Sanders

This book was written in 2002 before Google when Yahoo was the killer search engine. Tim Sanders was the Chief Solutions Officer at Yahoo! The premise of this book is that those of us who use love as a point of differentiation in business will separate ourselves from our competitors just as world-class distance runners separate themselves from the rest of the pack trailing behind them. The term love here is the selfless promotion of the growth of others. Premise in plain English - "To Serve is to Rule"

Circular Sander

Why is this important to me? Fear paralyzes people from taking action. Indecision and procrastination are two additional deadly sins of life. Think of any highly successful person and these three words will not enter your mind. Their ability to perform sets them apart. When you ponder the truly great people in history that made a lasting impact, you will find that they lead a life of service. Their purpose was bigger than them. People like Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln. These people were not perfect and had very strong definite purposes in life. They lead a life of service and gave to the greater good. This book is about acting in kind to promote and help others.

Circular Sander

This book is broken down into 4 sections and we covered the main point previously. I will highlight the additional three core parts outlined in the book.

1. Knowledge - Tim argues that "knowledge currency" is social currency on steroids. Accumulate as much knowledge as possible and share it with others. Help them help themselves and the people around them. This really is excellent advice. This is old advice and simply means that two heads are better than one. Napoleon Hill wrote a lot of information around the Master Mind group. Master Mind groups allow people to emulate and associate from the best people in any field. If you think about the Law of Reciprocation & Law of Compensation, then building up people with knowledge will come back to you. There is no better way to build a company then to gain knowledge and share it.

2. Network - Tim talks about the power of creating a network of contacts. He laid out a guideline for LinkedIn and Facebook with this book. Remember that this was written in 2002. The value of a network is equal to the square of the number members. Think about both Facebook and LinkedIn, we are only two levels away from 1,000,000 people. This is a very powerful concept that you need to understand. To impact these people, we have to have something to offer. This goes back to the knowledge we acquire.

3. Compassion - I am from Detroit and have worked on the Chrysler factory floor.

Back then, I can tell you that old school management did not follow the ideas outlined here. The late Mother Teresa said the greatest disease in the West is not tuberculosis or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. There is an old saying in the sales game - "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care". This is the basis of what Tim is talking about. There is a tremendous opportunity for your compassion to make a difference in how people view you, and how they view themselves.

Love is the Killer App is a good book based on fundamental principles and to summarize Emerson; "If you want more, then give more". In order to give more, you need to have true compassion and knowledge. With those two things you can build your network and help people.

Business is circular. Some people do not realize this. Think about the person who is always starting over or the person that takes the shady way to the quick buck. They never attain true success over time. Time is the great equalizer to truth. Bernie Madoff lived high on the hog for a long a while but it was time and greed that finally brought him down.

I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. One thing you can take away from this book is accumulate Knowledge. I am a big believer in this. Everything you ever needed to know already exists. Schedule a minimum of 15 minutes each day to feed your brain. You can use this book summary site to help you do that.

Setting Up Shop - Hand Power Tools

In this article we'll be discussing power hand tools and which ones you need to get started woodworking. I'll also throw in a few "nice to have but not necessary tools" (and my wife said I couldn't say "not necessary tools" together in one sentence, I don't really mean it, I just said it).

Circular Sander

1/2 - 2 Hp Router- This tool is such a work horse in my shop that I couldn't imagine getting along without it. The router is the king of versatility in the shop. A router can perform a variety of shaping operations using different bits. You can make your own mouldings, put a decorative edge on a table top, or round over an edge. Your options are only limited by your imagination. The router can also handle joinery, mortising, edge jointing, pattern routing, and inlay work. Adding all these options together you can quickly see why I rarely build a project without the router involved in the process.

Circular Sander

Jigsaw- This is a great tool to have for cutting curves, circles, trimming, and crosscutting parts. A coping saw can do the job also, it just takes longer. And if you have a lot of curves to cut out you'll appreciate having a jigsaw.

Circular Saw- Just as the jigsaw shines in cutting curves, the circular saw's claim to fame is in cutting straight lines. I use a circular saw to trim down large sheet goods before I take them to the tablesaw. A circular saw is also great at crosscutting pieces that are too large to maneuver on the tablesaw. With the proper blade and a straight edge, the circular saw can do most things that a tablesaw can do.

Orbital or Random-Orbit Sanders- Sanding is probably the least liked activity in woodworking. Whenever I can save time and effort in the sanding process I will. And the best way to do this especially on flat surfaces, is with a random-orbit sander. I prefer the random-orbit to the orbit sander because it leaves a less noticeable scratch pattern.

Cordless Drill- This is a tool I use almost everyday. It's much more convenient to use than a corded drill. There are so many sizes and brands out on the market today that it can be mind blowing. The first thing to consider is what you'll be doing with it. For household repair and general woodworking, I think a 12 - 14 volt size is plenty. Weight becomes a big factor after you get up above 14 volts. It seems that woodworking magazines have an article every other month on cordless drills. Check these out and see which ones test better. Surprisingly, some 12 volts compare to 14 volts in torque and number of holes drilled, as do some 14 to 18 volt comparisons.

There are other tools that you may want to add later on, like a belt sander, a biscuit jointer, a 3 Hp router for a router table. An air compressor with a brad nailer would be nice, but the tools listed above are what I would consider the essentials. Remember, to always use your common sense when using any power tool. If it feels unsafe, don't do it. Read the manufacturer's instructions before using any tool. Some of these tools are very loud so use hearing protection. And as always wear safety glasses at all times in the shop.

Safety Tips For Operating a Portable Circular Saw

Circular saws are versatile tools that are relatively easy to operate and so convenient that we sometimes forget the risk they pose if not operated with caution. Popular Mechanics includes circular saws in its list of the 5 most dangerous tools for their role in tool related injuries. Even those who are experienced and comfortable using circular saws must use extreme caution each time they operate one. Neglecting proper safety precautions with circular saws can lead to accidents and injuries, even death.

Circular Sander

When operating any power tool, adhering to all safety precautions provided in the user manual is recommended to prevent injury. Below are some basic but essential safety tips to keep in mind when operating a circular saw:
Wear eye protection. Protecting your eyes from dust and debris is essential when working with a circular saw. Depending on the type of material you are cutting, a dust mask or respirator may also be advised. Keep the tool unplugged when not in use and when changing blades. This will prevent the tool from being turned on accidentally, which can cause injury as well as damage to the cord or blade. While the saw is still unplugged, check the lower blade guard. The lower blade guard is a spring loaded cover that surrounds the saw blade when not in use. It should retract smoothly and snap back over the blade when released. Use the recommended blade depth. While the tool is unplugged, the blade should be locked at a depth such that it extends below the surface to be cut by the amount specified by the manufacturer. The blade should just clear the bottom of the surface being cut. Support the surface being cut. Wood or other material being cut with a circular saw should be supported while you are making the cut. This may require two supports on each side of the cut and possibly a few clamps. Supports should be sturdy and designed to prevent the blade from being pinched as the surface separates.

Circular Sander

The tips covered here are important for circular saw safety, but do not cover every possible scenario. Exercising extreme caution, using common sense and following all manufacturer recommendations are imperative for your safety when working with electrical power tools. The owner's manual for your circular saw should cover specific safety rules intended for the tool you are using.
