How to Lubricate/Oil a Bosch or Skil Worm-Drive Circular Saw

A worm-drive circular saw is one of the more common power tools among both professional tool-users and weekend do-it-your-selfers. They are universally useful and have the tenacity to make most any construction or demolition project spectacularly more simple. Few users, though, understand the importance of regular maintenance, like lubrication.

Fortune, however, was kind to worm-drive circular saw users, and lubing your circ saw is a pretty simple process. A quick word of advice, though, before beginning this brief tutorial: always check your oil levels before using the saw. The oil level should never fall below the lowest threads in the tool housing, and, should that oil become thick or excessively dirty, flush the saw of the old oil and entirely relubricate it (*see below for flushing instructions).

OILING:
The first and foremost step in getting that saw good and lubed is disengaging the tool, ensuring it has no power source to draw from, and resting it firmly (on its foot) on a sturdy, flat surface. Next, you simply need to reach and check the oil. To do this, use the tool's wrench (the same one used to remove the saw blade) to remove the oil plug (this is the metal nut just above oil the reservoir that reads "oil level in operating position" on the right hand side of the tool). Add fresh oil to the oil reservoir allowing it to fill enough to spill out (a little) of the oil-hole at the arrow pointing up from the reservoir.

Next, you simply need to replace the oil plug and all will be right as rain with your worm-drive circular saw. Oh, and although you absolutely must use high-quality, high-speed oil (never, ever use motor oil), it is highly and always recommended that you use only Bosch or Skil lubricating oil in these tools. Using these lubes also offers the extra piece of mind in knowing that your tool is smooth and happy, and the simplicity of knowing exactly what to buy (Bosch lubricant: part number WD7LUB, Skil Lubricant: part number 80111). So, when lubing these Bosch and Skil saws, use only Bosch or Skil oils.

FLUSHING:
Now, if when checking the oil, the existing oil in the saw is ultra-dirty or thick, you will need to entirely flush the bad oil from the saw. To do this, immediately replace the oil plug, reengage the tool and allow it to simply run for about one minute to warm and loosen-up the existing oil. Remove the oil plug once more and invert the saw allowing the oil to drain completely from the reservoir.

Next, fill the reservoir with kerosene, return the plug again to its plugged position, reengage the tool and allow it to run for one minute. This will flush and clear-out the gear housing and reservoir of any residue. Remove the plug and invert the tool once more to entirely drain it of the kerosene.

After ensuring you've drained as much kerosene as possible from the reservoir, refill it with the aforementioned Bosch or Skil worm-drive circular saw lubricant (fill it, again, to a bit of a spilling point at the oil-hole). Return the plug, and you have successfully lubed your circular saw and single-handedly enhanced its life and performance. Good job.

The Temple of Heaven

The temple of heaven remains one of the best examples of traditional Chinese culture. The monument was constructed from 1406-1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor. The temple is made up of three separate sections: The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, The Imperial Vault of Heaven and The Circular Mound Altar. All of these were used during ceremonies, where the Emperor acted as 'the son of heaven' to perform the service. All the buildings have been restored and the temple is now a world heritage site, ensuring it is protected for years to come.

Beihai Park

Built back in the 10th century, Beihai Park is one of the most beautiful places in Beijing. It has an area of over 69 hectares featuring a large tranquil lake filling over half of the park. As well as many stunning botanical gardens and intricate ancient temples, it is the home of the nine-dragon wall. The wall is made up glazed bricks of seven different colours, one of only three similar walls in the whole of China. The area offers the perfect escape route from the bustling streets of the city.

A Step By Step Guide On How to Sand Your Wood Floor

One of the great things about wood floors is that they can be sanded down and refinished like new again. You could hire a professional to do this for you if you wish, but the truth is that there is nothing here that you couldn't do yourself. Sanding a wood floor just takes a little patience and following a certain procedure to get the results that you want. Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can sand your wood floor and have it looking like new in no time.

You actually could sand it all down by hand if you wanted to, but why would you? The absolute best way to go is to use a sanding machine that can be found very easily at tool rental places or hardware stores. Our recommendation is to use the drum type of sander, as this would usually produce the best results. Some people actually use a disk sander instead, but the circular motion can often leave circular marks in the floor that you won't appreciate later on unless you are very careful.

The drum sander on the other hand is designed to sand in a straight line so you can work with the grain of the wood planks that make up your floor. The only thing that the drum sander cannot accomplish is to get close to the wall's edge or around obstacles like a radiator. It can only get within a couple of inches or so because of it's design. So you will either have to hand sand these areas, or you can use one of the small power sanders that are available at most hardware stores to get in tight in these small areas.

Now that you have your sander all set and ready to go, make sure that you start out using a course or medium grain sandpaper to get the ball rolling. The purpose of this first pass is to get as much of the old finish off the floor as possible at one time. The way that sanding works is you start with the heavier grains first and then with each pass use a finer grain sandpaper to leave a smooth finish at the end that is ready to be covered.

Before you begin sanding, go around the room and look for any nailheads that have popped up or anything in the floor that needs to be removed before the sanding begins. You don't want to tear up your sandpaper on these kind of obstacles. So make sure that all nails are flush with the surface of the floor before you get started.

With each pass of the room, also use your small sander to catch up the edges and corners of the room and around obstacles where the drum sander cannot get close enough. How many passes are needed to bring your floor down to the point where it can be refinished is hard to say. Most often, two to three passes are all that is needed. However, on badly damaged floors, it may take an extra pass or two to get the job done.

Another consideration is that you can also use varnish remover to take off a good portion of the old finish before you even begin sanding if you Iike. Varnish remover can be a pain to work with at times though, and so many people just prefer to use the drum sander for the entire job.

As you finish sanding with a fine grain sandpaper, you should be able to see nothing but the beautiful grain of your wood floor. At that point you have accomplish your goal, and are now ready to refinish the floor and receive compliments on what a great job you have done.
